Ajit Anjum was born on Monday, April 7, 1969 (52 years old; from 2021) in the Begusarai district, Bihar, India. Her zodiac sign is Aries. Due to the frequent relocations of his father, Ajit studied in different cities. One of the schools he studied in was Town High School, Hajipur. He passed the 12th class of Darbhanga and then graduated in History with honors from Langat Singh College, Muzaffarpur, affiliated with the University of Bihar.

Ajit developed an interest in reading and writing news while studying at university. His first newspaper writing was a letter to the editor that he wrote to the editor of the Patliputra Times. It was 1987. I was in college during that time. To better understand journalism, he began to read various popular newspapers and magazines of that time, such as ‘Hindustan Dainik’ ‘Nav Bharat Times’. At the same time, he used to write reports on the ground on the adjacent cities and send them to regional and national newspapers in Delhi.

Little by little, the newspapers began to publish his writings. This strengthened her determination to pursue journalism as a professional career. During his early days of journalism, he also worked as a freelancer in Patna, where he also began writing for Dharmyug, Saptahik Hindustan, Dinmaan, and Ravivar.

His first job was in 1989 as a news writer for a regional newspaper, Choti Duniya. At the time, a journalism degree was not required to be hired as a journalist. He reported on the ground for Chothi Duniya during the 1989 Indian general elections. In 1990, he moved to Delhi after being recruited by Amar Ujala. He worked for Amar Ujala as a reporter from 1990 to 1994.

Later, in the same year, he joined BAG Films as a freelancer. His work included making investigative documentaries on different topics for Doordarshan.

After working as a freelancer for three months, he joined BAG Films as a permanent employee in 1995. He earned Rs. 10,000 as your salary when you joined the job. He joined the Aaj Tak news channel in 2002, worked there for a year, and then rejoined BAG Films in 2001.

He returned to BAG Films because at that time many programs were being planned for Star News. He conceptualized several shows on Star News, including Pol Khol (started in 2004) Red Alert, and Santini. In 2007, BAG Films launched the News 24 news channel. Ajit Anjum was appointed managing editor.

In 2014, he left News 24 and acquired the position of Managing Director at India TV.

She then left India TV in 2017 and started doing freelance journalism. Then, Associated Broadcasting Company Pvt Ltd (ABCPL) launched its Hindi news channel TV9 Bharatvarsh in March 2019 and appointed Ajit Anjum as its consulting editor.

However, he left TV9 Bharatvarsh in September 2019 due to some differences with the channel. One of them (as revealed by Ajit himself) was that his program on TV9 Bharatvarsh ‘Debate with Ajit Anjum’ was reduced from one hour to half an hour. Ajit said in an interview that the management team of TV9 Bharatvarsh was uncomfortable because he criticized the current BJP regime in the nation and the way he rigorously interrogated people from the ruling party. He also ended his career in television news channels with his resignation from TV9 Bharatvarsh. Here’s a tweet he posted after the resignation.

As revealed by Ajit Anjum, the restrictions placed on him while working in the mainstream media were compromising his journalistic ethics, so he decided to continue his journalistic career on YouTube. He started a YouTube news channel under his own name, ‘Ajit Anjum’, in March 2020.

According to an interview with Kumar Shyam in February 2021, Anjum said that considering the current state of the Indian media, he would never like to go back to any television news channel. He added that working independently at YouTube has given him immense satisfaction, and he regards it as the golden period of his career as a journalist.

Awards and Achievements

  • For his tremendous reporting and coverage during the 2010 Bihar floods, he was awarded the prestigious Ramnath Goenka Excellence Award in Journalism.

  • Considering his effort in journalism, he was included in the list of the 50 most powerful people in Bihar by Fem magazine in 2016.
  • He was awarded the National Dushyant Kumar Prize in 2017.

Facts / Trivia

  • Ajit was not born with Anjum as his last name. His full name was Ajit Kumar, even until the early days of his career. He changed his last name from ‘Kumar’ to ‘Anjum’ as the name Ajit Kumar was quite common in news writers during those days.
  • Ajit met his wife, Geeta Shree, while he was working as a reporter for Amar Ujala in the early 1990s. Initially, Ajit’s family was against their marriage; however, they accepted it after some time.
